Spain open their 2018 World Cup challenge against Portugal on Friday, and Sergio Ramos is determined to put the turmoil of the last 48 hours behind them.

Julen Loptegui was sacked on Wednesday after being named as the new Real Madrid boss just two days before the start of the tournament.

Fernando Hierro has taken his place, but the saga has thrown the Spanish camp into chaos on the eve of their first game in Sochi.

La Rioja are among the favourites for the World Cup in Russia and Ramos has called for unity ahead of a mouth-watering clash with club-mate Cristiano Ronaldo.

‘You have to turn the page as quickly as possible,’ he said on Thursday.

‘It hasn’t been a pleasant time but the sooner we leave the subject behind, the better.

‘We all admire Hierro. We know him from a long time ago and he is the ideal man for this moment.

‘I want to leave, this press conference is like a funeral. We’re starting the World Cup tomorrow, which is a fabulous event.’
