Cardi B has weighed in on the controversy surrounding Jermaine Dupri, who said that today’s female hip-hop stars are just “strippers rapping.” During an appearance on PEOPLE Now, Jermaine didn’t seem to be impressed when he was asked to name his favorite female emcee in the game, including Cardi, Nicki Minaj and Megan Thee Stallion.

Pointing out that all of them are “rapping about the same things,” the 46-year-old rapper said, “I don’t think they’re showing us who’s the best rapper. I think they’re trying to show for me, it’s like strippers rapping. And as far as rap goes, I’m not getting who’s the best rapper. I’m getting like, ‘OK, you got a story about you dancing in the club, you got a story about you dancing in the club, you got a story about you dancing in the club.’ It’s like, ‘OK, who’s going to be the rapper?’ ”

He went on saying, “At some point, somebody’s going to have to break out of that mold and just show us–talk about other things, just rap about other things besides that.”

Cardi caught wind of his comment and she clearly had a few words to say in her defense. “I rap about my p***y because she’s my best friend,” she said in an Instagram video, before explaining that she had actually tried to stray from the topic, but her song didn’t sell well. “When I did ‘Be Careful’, people was talking mad s**t in the beginning, like, ‘What the f**k is this? This is not what I expected. I expected this, I expected that.’ So it’s like, if that’s what people ain’t tryna hear, then, alright, I’mma start rapping about my p***y again.”

In another video that she posted on the platform, Cardi mentioned how there are a lot of other female rappers who don’t talk about their genitals, but people and blogs don’t give them the recognition that they deserve at all. “There’s a lot of female rappers that be rapping they a** off and don’t be talking about they p***y and don’t be talking about getting down and dirty, and y’all don’t be supporting them,” she said.

“Y’all don’t be supporting them and they be mad dope. These bloggers don’t support them, they don’t give them the recognition. So don’t blame that s**t on us when y’all not the ones that’s supporting them,” the “Bodak Yellow” hitmaker continued, giving a shout-out to the likes of Tierra Whack, Rapsody and Kamaiyah. “I feel we need to put these girls in more magazines and blogs. Radio DJs play these girls. These girls can rap they a***s off and they don’t rap about their vaginas and sucking d**k.”

Her response was met with praises from social media users, who applauded her for getting real. “You’re too real I period… Just too real,” one said. “Facts. Consumers pretend they want ‘real lyrics’ etc but don’t support those type of artist!” another chimed in, while someone else commented, “This why you a queen fr most w the clout wouldn’t do this.”

Several celebrities have also jumped into the comment section to praise Cardi, with Lauren Jauregui saying, “This makes me so happy.” Anitta left a couple of hands clapping emojis, while YG simply said, “That’s love.”
